DESCRIPTION:@ 			\n			\n							 \n\n\nThe Subversive Eye: Surrealist and Experimental Photography from the David Raymond Collection\nJoin us for this installment of our Coffee with a Curator series where Museum Staff or invited guests speak on a range of Dalí-inspired topics. \nIn conjunction with our special exhibition\, The Subversive Eye: Surrealist and Experimental Photography from the David Raymond Collection\, this month’s talk will feature The Dalí’s Senior Curator Dr. William Jeffett as he explores David Raymond’s collection of surreal photography. \nIn celebration of the centennial of the founding of Surrealism in 1924\, this exhibition will feature 100+ works created by more than 50 artists\, highlighting the movement’s original aims in the medium of photography and its far-reaching influence. Notable artists include Eileen Agar\, Eugène Atget\, Joseph Bartuska\, Hans Bellmer\, Brassaï\, Manuel Alvarez-Bravo\, Robert Capa\, Georges Hugnet\, Clarence John Laughlin\, Dora Maar\, Lee Miller\, Lucia Moholy\, Osamu Shiihara\, Man Ray and Wols. He also holds degrees from Oxford University\, Yale University and University of Texas. Before joining The Dalí Museum\, Dr. Jeffett was Curator at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts at University of East Anglia (UK). At The Dalí\, he is responsible for the direction\, curation\, organization and co-ordination of exhibition programs; writing and editing of exhibition catalogs and other interpretative material\, including the interpretation of works by Dali; and research on the permanent collection.  \nDr. Jeffett contributes to the expansion of the Museum’s collection through seeking and recommending acquisitions. He is an active researcher and writer for The Dalí and other museums\, research institutes and universities. He has published numerous exhibition catalogs and articles devoted to Salvador Dalí\, other related artists and contemporary art. Dr. Jeffett has curated many shows for the Museum and other influential institutions\, including the Fundacio Joan Miro (Barcelona)\, Fundacio “La Caixa” (Madrid) and the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza (Madrid). He curated Dalí and Duchamp with Dawn Ades for The Dalí and Royal Academy (London).

SUMMARY:Art and Meditation at The Dalí
DESCRIPTION:@ 			\n			\n							 \n\n\nJoin us to journey inward through art and meditation at The Dalí. Our monthly meditation practice is based on the idea of looking at examples of art to achieve a dynamic stillness of the mind. Each session will examine an artwork from a current exhibition to make us think\, refocus\, slow down and go deeper into our minds to permit body connection and awareness. \nAfter a short introduction to the artwork\, we will consider what is in its narrative and formal qualities that could serve us to quiet our minds. Guided meditation instruction and suggestions will lead us to a place of calmness and equilibrium. Each session will introduce and utilize different sets of tools from a variety of spiritual traditions to assist staying in comfortable meditative mode for about twenty minutes. However\, anyone having a prior meditation practice is welcome to utilize it and join us for the collective peaceful energy building.  \nTibetan sing bowl sound will accompany us with an occasional bell throughout the practice and to signal the end of the meditation session. Afterwards\, we will welcome questions and comments about the practice\, the artwork\, and the experience in general. \nWe will conclude with a minute of closing meditation to internally seal the benefits of the practice.   \nLocation: The Dalí Museum’s Will Raymund Theater \nSeating for this event is limited. An event ticket is required for entry. Gallery access is not included. \n\nregister now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKristof Znyk \nKristof is a new transplant to St. Petersburg after living in New York for 30 years. A graduate of City University with a Master of Fine Arts degree\, Kristof taught visual arts in Gramercy Arts High School for 23 years. The intense city life and high job demands led him to become a spiritual seeker. After taking many classes in various yoga studios\, Kristof made the decision to study at the oldest New York City yoga establishment\, the Integral Yoga Institute.  Having earned his credentials\, he taught all aspects of yoga\, physical poses\, philosophy\, breath work and meditation at the institution from 2007 to 2020. Additional studies and certification in Restorative Yoga and Yoga for Kids helped Kristof to incorporate best practices with his students in high school as well as in the Yoga Institute. Hosted by former poet laureate of St. Petersburg\, Helen Pruitt Wallace and in partnership with Curtis Davis and Dennis Amadeus of Tampa’s GrowHouse poetry collective.  \nThe signup list will be posted on the door of the Museum’s Will Raymund Theater on Thu\, Dec 12 at 5:30pm. 20 spots will be available for poets in the order in which they sign up\, with 3 stand-by names if time allows. Each poet will have three minutes at the mic. \nWhether you want to listen\, read or perform a poem\, all are welcome. Adult audience is recommended.  \nLocation: The Dalí Museum’s Will Raymund Theater  \nThis event is held on the ground floor of the Museum (gallery access not included). Access to the Museum’s ground floor is free and open to the public. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nHelen Pruitt Wallace has published individual poems in several journals and anthologies. Individual books include Shimming the Glass House\, and a chapbook\, Pink Streets. A former Poet Laureate of St. Petersburg\, she is the curator of The Dalí Poetry series.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCurtis Davis was born and raised in Tampa\, FL. He has been writing and performing poetry since a youth in high school and has since traveled all over the states competing in international\, national\, and regional poetry slam competitions. In 2018\, Curtis was ranked the eight poet in the world after becoming a finalist in the Individual World Poetry Slam held in San Diego\, CA. He is the Creative Director of 501c3 Non-Profit Heard ‘Em Say Youth Arts Collective and is the Co-Founder of GrowHouse with Dennis Amadeus. GrowHouse is an artist collective dedicated to growing community\, growing culture and growing creatives through poetry and hip-hop. They host a monthly poetry slam and weekly poetry workshops inside the historical Kress building in Ybor City. Learn more about Curtis on his Instagram. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDennis Amadeus has built a career grounded by his passion to teach and inspire young people about the transformative power of education and expression\, from mentoring youth poets and keynote speaking engagements to curriculum design and implementation of dynamic art-based educational programming. As an artist/teaching artist\, Dennis has traveled extensively across the nation\, performing and conducting art-based educational workshops aimed at getting youth to see their creative potential. He has also organized multiple community fundraisers and book drives to support domestic and international causes\, including organizing 1000 books to be sent to Swaziland\, Africa\, to build a community library. Dennis’ continued community and civic engagement exhibit his desire to use his creativity and ability to bring people together to change communities on a local and international level. Dennis is a writer\, educator\, performance artist and a community organizer determined to use his creative talents to transform communities and the minds of young people.

DESCRIPTION:@ 			\n			\n							 \n\n\nIn celebration of the centennial of Surrealism\, marked by the publication of André Breton’s First Surrealist Manifesto in 1924\, this conference will bring together leading scholars to examine the movement’s enduring legacy and its diverse contributors. \nPenned by Breton\, the French writer and poet who spearheaded the movement in the wake of World War I\, the Manifesto defined Surrealism as a method for unveiling the “actual functioning of thought.” Championing unfiltered self-expression\, free from the constraints of convention and rationality\, Breton drew visual artists into the fold\, transforming art by rejecting traditional forms and thought processes. Salvador Dalí’s arrival in 1929 expanded Surrealism’s scope and impact\, leaving an indelible mark on the movement’s evolution. \nIn 2004\, The Dalí Museum hosted a landmark conference in St. Petersburg\, FL\, commemorating the centenary of Salvador Dalí’s birth. The event produced groundbreaking scholarship that has since shaped the field of Surrealism studies.
