SUMMARY:MFA Spotlight Series | Framing Art History with Casey Broker and Noah Cox
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Rococo Gallery as Casey Broker and Noah Cox direct our attention to something found in every art museum but not often recognized as a work of art – the frame. Frames come in all shapes\, sizes\, and colors and have existed in the history of art since Ancient Egypt. Over time\, they have evolved in style and function\, switched between artworks\, been discarded\, or been preserved. In this intimate conversation\, we’ll learn more about the history of frames and discover how we can connect to the ones at the MFA.

SUMMARY:Art and Meditation at The Dalí – SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:@ \n \n \n\n\nThis event has sold out. \nJoin us to journey inward through art and meditation at The Dalí. Our monthly meditation practice is based on the idea of looking at examples of art to achieve a dynamic stillness of the mind. Each session will examine an artwork from a current exhibition to make us think\, refocus\, slow down and go deeper into our minds to permit body connection and awareness. \nAfter a short introduction to the artwork\, we will consider what is in its narrative and formal qualities that could serve us to quiet our minds. Guided meditation instruction and suggestions will lead us to a place of calmness and equilibrium. Each session will introduce and utilize different sets of tools from a variety of spiritual traditions to assist staying in comfortable meditative mode for about twenty minutes. However\, anyone having a prior meditation practice is welcome to utilize it and join us for the collective peaceful energy building. \nTibetan sing bowl sound will accompany us with an occasional bell throughout the practice and to signal the end of the meditation session. Afterwards\, we will welcome questions and comments about the practice\, the artwork\, and the experience in general. \nWe will conclude with a minute of closing meditation to internally seal the benefits of the practice. \nLocation: The Dalí Museum’s Will Raymund Theater \nSeating for this event is limited. We recommend arriving early to secure seating with your group. \n\nRegister to attend in person at the link below. This event is free\, with limited capacity. An event ticket is required for entry. Gallery access is not included. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nKristof Znyk \nKristof is a new transplant to St. Petersburg after living in New York for 30 years. A graduate of City University with a Master of Fine Arts degree\, Kristof taught visual arts in Gramercy Arts High School for 23 years. The intense city life and high job demands led him to become a spiritual seeker. After taking many classes in various yoga studios\, Kristof made the decision to study at the oldest New York City yoga establishment\, the Integral Yoga Institute. Having earned his credentials\, he taught all aspects of yoga\, physical poses\, philosophy\, breath work and meditation at the institution from 2007 to 2020. Additional studies and certification in Restorative Yoga and Yoga for Kids helped Kristof to incorporate best practices with his students in high school as well as in the Yoga Institute. To deepen and to continue his own spiritual journey\, Kristof was a devoted practitioner of meditation at the Insight Meditation Center\, the Rubin Museum in NYC as well as at ashrams in the Bahamas and California. \n\n\n\nBanner Image: Detail of Dalinian Prophecy\, 1975 by Salvador Dalí

SUMMARY:Stop Me If You’ve Heard This One – An Evening with Kristen Arnett
DESCRIPTION:This is no April Fools’ Day prank\, but we will definitely be discussing some clowns! Tombolo Books is thrilled to welcome New York Times bestselling Florida author Kristen Arnett back to the bookstore to celebrate the release of her latest novel\, Stop Me If You’ve Heard This One! \nArnett will be joined in converation by the author of Helen House and managing editor of Autostraddle and TriQuarterly\, Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya! \nMore about Stop Me If You’ve Heard This One \nCherry Hendricks might be down on her luck\, but she can write the book on what makes something funny: she’s a professional clown who creates raucous\, zany fun at gigs all over Orlando. Between her clowning and her shifts at an aquarium store for extra cash\, she’s always hustling. Not to mention balancing her judgmental mother\, her messy love life\, and her equally messy community of fellow performers. \nThings start looking up when Cherry meets Margot the Magnificent—a much older lesbian magician—who seems to have worked out the lines between art\, business\, and life\, and has a slick\, successful career to prove it. With Margot’s mentorship and industry connections\, Cherry is sure to take her art to the next level. Plus\, Margot is sexy as hell. It’s not long before Cherry must decide how much she’s willing to risk for Margot and for her own explosive new act—and what kind of clown she wants to be under her suit. \nEqual parts bravado\, tenderness\, and humor\, and bursting with misfits\, magicians\, musicians\, and mimes\, Stop Me If You’ve Heard This One is a masterpiece of comedic fiction that asks big questions about art and performance\, friendship and community\, and the importance of timing in jokes and in life. \nKristen Arnett is the queer author of With Teeth: A Novel (Riverhead Books\, 2021) which was a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award in fiction and the New York Times bestselling debut novel Mostly Dead Things (Tin House\, 2019) which was also a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award in fiction. Her work has appeared at The New York Times\, TIME\, The Cut\, and elsewhere. Her next novel\, STOP ME IF YOU’VE HEARD THIS ONE\, about a lesbian birthday party clown\, will be published by Riverhead Books. She has a Masters in Library and Information Science from Florida State University and lives in Orlando\, Florida. \nKayla Kumari Upadhyaya is a lesbian writer of essays\, short stories\, and pop culture criticism living in Orlando. She is the author of Helen House (Burrow Press 2022)\, a queer horror novelette. She is the managing editor of Autostraddle and the managing editor of TriQuarterly. Her short stories appear in McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern\, Catapult\, The Offing\, Joyland\, The Rumpus\, Cake Zine\, and others. She was a 2021 nonfiction fellow and a 2023 speculative fiction writer in residence at Lambda Literary’s Writers Retreat for Emerging LGBTQ Voices. She is currently a Tin House Fellow.

SUMMARY:The Violent Femmes To Perform First Albums For Two Nights At Jannus Live
DESCRIPTION:Ground-Breaking\, Avant Garde Artists Violent Femmes are blazing into 2025 with a Spring Tour that is packing a double-shot of hits as they perform BOTH their debut\, self-titled album and their sophomore release\, Hallowed Ground. The tour will hit Jannus Live for two night on March 31 and April 1. \nThroughout these highly-anticipated performances\, which have boasted sold out crowds for the past year\, the Femmes will start the show by playing their second album\, Hallowed Ground. Following a brief intermission\, the band will retake the stage and play their debut record\, Violent Femmes\, as well as a few fan- and band-favorites to finish the show. Serving as a sonic time capsule for the soul\, these special dates will capture the pivotal moment in music that has been hailed as the “soundtrack to male puberty.” \nDuring the Hallowed Ground set\, fans can expect to hear songs like the bold and bluesy “Sweet Misery Blues” and the banjo-fueled “Country Death Song\,” which showed a more eclectic side to the band by fusing elements of country\, gospel\, and blues into their music. An album that continues to mystify and excite fans\, Hallowed Ground sets the stage perfectly for the more raw and raucous second half of the show. \nThe bombastic hits from their Billboard-topping\, eponymous album will be on full display during the Violent Femmes portion of the show. Iconic and influential songs such as “Kiss Off\,” “Add It Up\,” and “Gone Daddy Gone\,” which propelled the record to sell more than three million copies worldwide and stand as a pillar of an American underground movement\, will be performed as well as hits from the remainder of the Femmes vast and formative repertoire.\nA musical experience like none other\, the Violent Femmes Tour has been hailed as one of the best concert experiences of 2024. Now\, in its second year\, fans can expect a barrage of hits rounded out by some of the Femmes’ finest hidden gems.

Mitch Rolling will be handling sound duties\, because he’s a great human being… four hours of John Prine in the friendliest little beach city on Earth – where we’re all here\, cuz we ain’t all there! \nAbout us: \nThe Village Courtyard is home to Low Tide Kava Bar and The North End Taphouse & Kitchen. \nThe Taphouse is your go-to neighborhood bar\, offering a cozy atmosphere\, great drinks and mouthwatering snacks.
