DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the Foundation’s monthly Social Justice Book Club\, which is held in partnership with Tombolo Books. \nThis month we are reading Calling In by Loretta J Ross. \nFrom a pioneering Black feminist and MacArthur “Genius” Fellow\, this urgent and exhilarating memoir-manifesto-handbook provides bold\, practical new ways to transform conflicts into connections\, even with those we’re tempted to walk away from. \nIn 1979\, Loretta Ross was a single mother in Washington who’d had to drop out of Howard University. She was working at the DC Rape Crisis Center when the organization got a letter from a man in prison saying he wanted to learn how to not be a rapist anymore. At first\, she was furious. As a survivor of sexual violence\, she wanted to write back pouring out her rage. Instead\, she made a different choice\, a choice to reject the response her trauma was pushing her towards. This choice would set her on the path towards developing a framework that would come to guide her whole career: Rather than calling people out\, try to call even your unlikeliest allies in. Hold them accountable—but with love. \nCalling In is at once a handbook\, a manifesto\, and a memoir—because the power of Loretta Ross’s message comes from who she is and what she’s lived through. Throughout the week\, projectALCHEMY’s company dance artists — Kirsten Standridge\, Heidi Brewer\, Esophia Higgins-Wilkins\, Sam Kedziora\, Talia Demps\, Antonio Hernandez\, and Sarah Hamilton — will create new site-responsive works in seven neighborhoods across St. Petersburg: Roser Park\, Historic Kenwood\, Maximo Park\, Downtown\, Edgemoor\, Historic Old Northeast\, and The Deuces Corridor. \nThese dance happenings are free and intentionally ephemeral\, emerging at various moments throughout the day. They are not heavily advertised. Instead\, they are designed to appear organically—inviting residents to encounter dance unexpectedly in the places where they live\, walk\, and gather. This approach expands the idea of where dance can live and makes the art form accessible to everyone in their everyday environment. \nThe project concludes with a ticketed closing event at The Studio@620\, where the company will create a brand-new\, in-the-moment improvisational work that reflects on the dance experiences that unfolded across the city throughout the week. This performance is not a repeat of the neighborhood pieces—it is a reimagining and expansion of the stories\, landscapes\, and movement research discovered in those spaces\, interwoven with short dance films and live music by Darren McFarland. \nMIXed: Across St. Pete honors the beauty of St. Petersburg’s neighborhoods\, the importance of accessible dance experiences\, and the power of movement to illuminate the spaces we call home. \nStudent tickets will be available for purchase at the door with a valid student ID.
