SUMMARY:Coffee with a Curator
DESCRIPTION:@ \n \n \n\n\nsurrealism in photography\nJoin us for this month’s installment of our Coffee with a Curator series\, where Museum staff or invited guests speak on a range of Salvador Dalí-inspired topics. \nIn conjunction with our upcoming exhibition The Subversive Eye: Surrealist and Experimental Photography from the David Raymond Collection\, this month’s lecture will feature photographer and art critic Tom Winchester. \nTom Winchester’s presentation on Surrealism in photography will include contemporary and historical images. Because of photography’s unique relation to realism\, its relation to Surrealism is also unique. Whether it’s Dalí and Buñuel collaborating on a film\, Uelsmann creating magic in the darkroom or Spike Jonze directing a music video\, photographic processes have been used to make real situations that seem like dreams. \nLocation: The Dalí Museum’s Will Raymund Theater (registration required)\, with overflow seating available in the Raymond James Community Room or live on YouTube (link below). \n\nRegister to attend in person at the link below. This event is free\, with limited capacity. An event ticket is required for entry. Gallery access is not included. \n\nregister now\n\n\nTo watch the live stream from home\, click below at the time of the program: \n\nstream now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTom Winchester \nTom Winchester is a photographer and art critic in Saint Petersburg\, FL. He holds a BFA in photography and an MFA in art criticism and writing from School of Visual Arts in NYC. He’s an adjunct professor at Ringling College and Eckerd College\, and is the founder of Art Critter Magazine.

SUMMARY:Internal Paint: A Flaitz Whatever Solo Art Show
DESCRIPTION:For Ryan Flaitz\, the artist and creative mind behind Los Angeles-based persona\, “Flaitz Whatever\,” art has always been his greatest passion. Ryan was born and raised in the small city of Hornell\, located in western New York State. Although he grew up in a small city\, he has always felt more connected to big cities with a fast-paced mentality. Inspired by street art and city culture of big cities\, Ryan began putting his inspiration into his work from a young age.\nRyan’s journey to full-time artist was a less traditional path than most. In 2007\, Ryan founded the now popular\, athletic brand\, PSD Underwear. The brand’s clothing featured original designs and artwork by Ryan. He spent a decade developing\, launching\, and growing the start-up by traveling the country until Ryan ultimately landed in LA\, where the company found its most success. \nPSD is a company known for its involvement with professional athletes and celebrities and much like the art of Flaitz Whatever\, the brand’s wild style is hard to miss. PSD’s success has allowed Ryan the freedom and time to fully dedicate himself to his personal and proprietary art\, Flaitz Whatever. The meaning behind the name is simple: Flaitz being his last name and Whatever being the attitude that he can paint whatever he wants. \nFlaitz Whatever art is known for its bright colors and unique cardboard medium stamped with the branding of his signature. Ryan is a freehand artist and enjoys using a material that is often discarded and transforming it into a work of art. Growing up in the 90s\, it’s clear where he finds his inspiration\, hip-hop music\, urban and sneaker culture\, and sports. Flaitz Whatever regularly features pieces as part of series but it is always changing and evolving as Ryan grows as an artist. \nSchedule: \n\nSaturday\, January 4th\, 2025\n\nDoors at 6:00PM\nShow at 7:00PM\nAt Coastal Creative\n\n\n\nTicket Pricing: \n\nTickets are FREE for a limited time! SUMMARY:This is the Year: Book Launch with Gloria Muñoz
DESCRIPTION:This dazzling YA cli-fi written in prose and verse will speak to any reader struggling with the state of our world and how to understand their place in it. \nWe are kicking off 2025 in the best way with the book launch celebration of Gloria Muñoz’s debut YA novel\, This is the Year! Muñoz and Carmen Alvarez open our event season in the courtyard talking about this gorgeous\, poetic novel! \nThis is the Year is now available for preorder\, and readers who order their copy from Tombolo Books will also get the special book-themed swag included with their purchase! \nMore about This is the Year: \n“In outer space\, no one will know me as the girl with the dead sister.” \nSeventeen-year-old self-proclaimed Goth and aspiring writer Julieta Villarreal is drowning. She’s grieving her twin sister who died in a hit-and-run\, her Florida home is crumbling under the weight of climate disaster\, and she isn’t sure how much longer she can stand to stay in a place that doesn’t seem to have room for her. \nThen\, Juli is recruited by Cometa\, a private space program enlisting high-aptitude New American teens for a high-stakes mission to establish humanity’s first extraterrestrial settlement. Cometa pitches this as an opportunity for Juli to give back to her adopted country; Juli sees it as her only chance to do something big with her life. \nJuli begins her training\, convinced Cometa is her path to freedom. But her senior year is full of surprises\, including new friendships\, roller skating\, and first love. And through her small but poignant acts of environmentalism\, Juli begins to find hope in unexpected places. As her world collapses from the ramifications of the climate crisis\, Juli must decide if she’ll carry her loss together with her community or leave it all behind. \nTold in gripping prose interspersed with poems from Juli’s writing journal\, this genre-bending novel explores themes of immigration\, climate justice\, grief\, and the power of communities. \nGloria Muñoz is the author of Your Biome Has Found You and Danzirly\, which won the Ambroggio Prize and the Florida Gold Medal Book Award for Poetry. She is an Academy of American Poets Poet Laureate Fellow\, a Hedgebrook Fellow\, a Macondista\, a Highlights Foundation Diverse Verse Fellow\, and a part of Las Musas. This Is the Year is her debut novel. Visit her online at gloriamunoz.com and on Instagram at @bygloriamunoz. \nCarmen Alvarez of TomesAndTextiles is a Cuban-American residing in Florida. Outside of her passion for books and undying love of my local library\, she adores vintage fashion\, music\, film\, supporting the local arts and her 2 dogs. She’s weirdly obsessed with skincare and will have a sheet mask recommendation for you at the drop of a hat.

SUMMARY:The Life of Herod the Great – Launch Event with Deborah G. Plant
DESCRIPTION:Tombolo Books and The Woodson African American Musuem of Florida invite you to celebrate a never before published novel from beloved author Zora Neale Hurston\, revealing the historical Herod the Great—not the villain the Bible makes him out to be but a religious and philosophical man who lived a life of valor and vision. Please RSVP and let us know you’ll be there! \nScholar-Editor Dr. Deborah G. Plant and local author Sheree L. Greer celebrate the life and work of one of the most essential voices in the canon of Florida literature\, Zora Neale Hurson! \nThe event will take place at The Woodson African American Museum of Florida located at 2240 9th Ave South\, St. Petersburg FL 33712. Doors open at 6pm for a pre-event reception with light refreshments\, and the event begins at 6:30pm. Tombolo Books will be on site with copies of The Life of Herod the Great for purchase. \nIn the 1950s\, as a continuation of Moses\, Man of the Mountain\, Zora Neale Hurston penned a historical novel about one of the most infamous figures in the Bible\, Herod the Great. In Hurston’s retelling\, Herod is not the wicked ruler of the New Testament who is charged with the “slaughter of the innocents\,” but a forerunner of Christ—a beloved king who enriched Jewish culture and brought prosperity and peace to Judea. \nPortraying Herod within this vivid and dynamic world of antiquity\, little known to modern readers\, Hurston’s unfinished manuscript brings this complex\, compelling\, and misunderstood leader fully into focus. Hurston shared her findings about Herod’s rise\, his reign\, and his waning days in letters to friends and associates. Text from three of these letters concludes the manuscript in an intimate way. \nDecades later\, Dr. Deborah G. Plant has dedicated much of her career to studying the life and work of Hurston. In her role as scholar-editor\, Plant’s “Commentary: A Story Finally Told” assesses Hurston’s pioneering work and underscores Hurston’s perspective that the first century BCE has much to teach us and that the lens through which to view this dramatic and stirring era is the life and times of Herod the Great.

SUMMARY:Aigrettes\, Egrets\, and Regrets: Nineteenth-Century Fashion and the Desire for Feathers
DESCRIPTION:Aigrettes\, Egrets\, and Regrets: Nineteenth-Century Fashion and the Desire for Feathers\nFeathers\, long a staple of fashionable design\, became paramount to the well-dressed in nineteenth-century Europe and the United States. They increasingly decorated the edges of custom-made dresses\, graced hats\, or adorned elaborate hairstyles. \nMuch like the production of John James Audubon’s Birds of America series\, this obsession with feathers in fashion reflected larger cultural interests in understanding and replicating the natural world. Though beautiful to look at\, these designs ultimately came at an ecological price—with many bird populations decimated to meet demand. \nJoin art historian Erin Wilson as she explores these sartorial and environmental legacies. \nAigrettes\, Egrets\, and Regrets:\nNineteenth-Century Fashion and the Desire for Feathers\nThursday\, January 9\, 2025\n6:00 PM–7:00 PM\nMarly Room\nMuseum of Fine Arts\, St. Petersburg\n255 Beach Drive NE\, St. Petersburg FL 33701 \nFree for MFA Members; $15 for Not-Yet-Members (Youth 17 and under are Free!)* \n*Program ticket includes Art After Dark admission from 5:00 PM–8:00 PM!
